If we talk about ancient age/time that time also teaching is considered the noblest profession among all the professions. Even in Vedic times, parents used to send their children to “Gurukul” where teachers “Guru” were present to impart all essential knowledge and skill of the students. In those periods, teachers (Guru) were rendered without any discrimination among children, and all the students were treated equally in “Gurukul”.
TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teacher, TGT is for those teachers who have completed their teacher training. TGT is not a course, it is a part of the graduate training in the field of teacher’s education. But if the candidate is a graduate and completed his / her B.ED then the candidate is a TGT Teacher and after this, he /she doesn't need to do any teacher training to become a TGT Teacher.
Eligibility Criteria for TGT
TGT teachers are eligible to teach the classes below 10th which includes 10th as well.
Subjects that are taught by the TGT teachers are:
PGT stands for Post Graduate Teacher. PGT means if you are a postgraduate (i.e.M.A)and you have B.ED and M.ED then you become a postgraduate teacher. Class/students under a PGT teacher is from Class 11th to Class 12th. This test is a primary qualifying in nature which is also mandatory for those aspirant teachers who are willing to teach in the government school which is run by the central and state government.
Eligibility Criteria for PGT
PGT teachers are eligible to teach the Class 11th and 12th:
PRT stands for Primary Teachers. PRT teachers are those teachers who are qualified to teach the students of primary classes in the school. B.ED is compulsory for TGT, PGT, PRT without having a bachelor's degree you can’t move further. Students / Classes under the PRT teachers are from primary to 5th class.
Eligibility Criteria for PRT
PRT Teachers are eligible to teach the class nursery to 5th.
Subjects that are taught by the PRT teachers are:
Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) |
TGT teachers are eligible to teach classes till the 10th. If you want to become a TGT teacher then you have to clear your B.ED which is a 2-year professional course. |
TGT teacher’s essential qualification is graduation with a minimum of 50% marks and having B.ED degree. |
Candidates should have 4 years integrated degree course from NCERT with a 50% minimum in concerned subjects. |
A TGT teacher is eligible to teach the students of 6th to 10th / middle school those teachers are considered as TGT teachers. |
For being a TGT teacher he/she must have given the CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test)it is mandatory for all TGT teachers. |
TGT teachers are allowed to choose the particular subject in which he/she has done their graduation. |
Here is the example of KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan). In KVS the maximum age limit of a TGT teacher is 35 years there is age relaxation for the reserved category. |
The age limit may vary from different states and schools according to the post. Even though the selection process is based on a written test and the performance during the interview. |
TGT teachers of KVS, the format of the examination - 150 questions total and with the time limit of 2hr30min. The examination procedure may change according to state to state, school to school, institutes to institutes. |
There is a good career in being a TGT teacher in private schools. In KVS the grade pay of a TGT teacher is-4600, pay scale -34,800, basic salary - 17140 with an aad up of other allowances as well, Total approx. Gross salary of a TGT Teacher starts from 50,000. |

Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) |
PGT teachers are eligible to teach classes till 12th. PGT teachers have to clear their post-graduate degrees before applying for a B.ED course. |
PGT teachers must have a post-graduation degree after their B.Sc, B.A.for example (M.A. or M.Sc. in any stream along with the Bachelor of Education degree (B.ED/M.ED). |
PGT teachers who are B.ED or M.ED with minimum 50% aggregate marks or above from any recognized university. |
PGT teachers handle Senior Secondary Level (i.e 11th and 12th)those teachers are considered as PGT teachers. |
Being a PGT teacher he/she has to be a post-graduate in Maths, English, etc. selected subject it is mandatory for every PGT teacher. |
There is a good career scope in government schools/institutes like Kendriya Vidyalaya, Navodaya Vidyalaya, and many others. The selection process for PGT teachers is based on written tests and interviews according to the post. |
The format of examination can be different according to states, schools, institutes, etc. |
In the private sector also some renowned private schools also offer a great package to PGT teachers. |
PGT teachers can also start their careers in the private sector also. In KVS, the pay scale of a PGT teacher is -19,300, Grade pay- 4800, Basic salary-18150 which includes other allowances as well. Total approx. Gross salary starting from-53,000. |

Primary Teachers (PRT) |
The primary teacher or elementary teacher handles the students of class 1st to 5th as a primary teacher. |
PRT candidates must have a Diploma in elementary education(D.EI.ED)this is a 2-year diploma course which is pursued full - time and at distance learning as well. |
The PRT diploma is divided into 4 semesters and polish PRT teachers move further and work as primary teachers in primary schools. |
PRT teacher has to give an entrance exam for (D.EI.ED)in which every individual has passed the examination of 10+2 or equivalent with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks. |
PRT teachers have to understand and add-up diversity in their teaching profession. |
PRT teachers have to develop the skill of specific talent and enhance the knowledge of their students. |
Intellectual demand of young students from different social-economic backgrounds, upbringings, religions, cultures, ethnicities, etc. |
Most in the government and private sector across the country provide a Diploma in Elementary Education. |
Developing the skills of a quality learning environment in the classroom. |
